Electrical treeing bottlenecks the operation reliability and service life of cross-linked polyethylene(XLPE) power cables. This paper adopts metal needle defects to model a region of electrical stress in XLPE cables
and investigates the effects of different boosting rates(0.1 kV/s
1 kV/s) on electrical tree growth characteristics of the XLPE cables under the power frequency(50 Hz).The result indicates that the inception of electrical tree is faster under higher boosting rate
and the structure of the electrical tree changes from branch morphology to dense branch morphology with increasing fractal dimension.
