With the development of synchronized phasor measurement technique and the profound research on power systems
people observed that the disturbance of power-angle propagates in the power system with a speed much lower than that of light. The continuum model breaks through the limit of traditional concept. It studies electromechanical dynamics of large-scale power systems using wave motion principle
as is a completely novel viewpoint.Based on the vector field theory of the classical physics
this paper develops a nonlinear electromechanical wave equation in the continuum model for large-scale power systems. The analytical solution of the linearized wave equation about the equilibrium state shows the amplitude propagation mechanism of the electromechanical wave. Finally
the simulation results of a ring discrete system of 64 generators validate the proposed electromechanical wave continuum model for power systems. As a novel mathematical model
it might reveal the internal rules of electromechanical dynamics for large-scale power systems.
