Insulation coordination of converter station is a main problem in the UHVDC design
which will influence safe operation of the whole DC system.According to the published literature
an EMTDC model of switching overvoltage was built via the PSCAD/EMTDC software.Then
the overvoltage at DC side of ±800 kV converter station under various operation and fault conditions was calculated
which included the maximum overvoltage on AC buses
DC lines
neutral buses
and so on.The applications of arresters in UHVDC and the over-voltage calculation of with or without surge arrester were also discussed.Simulation results show that it would be useful for further analysis of ultra-high voltage direct current transmission system for AC and DC operating system failures caused by over-voltage and the correspending size of the level of insulation.
