The paper deals with the 3D finite element analysis of the loss of the tank in main transformer of 200 km/h electric locomotive based on edge element. As the main transformer of electric locomotive is of high leakage reactance and multi-winding
the measured value of the tank loss is 31.245 kW with magnification method
while the result of the tank loss is 45.791 kW with 2D finite element method(FEM) and 30.478 kW with 3D FEM. Compared with the test
it shows that the 3D FEM may provide more accurate values for evaluating the eddy current loss and stray loss of the tank. The new calculations provide more scientific rules for the corresponding shielding measure.
