This paper uses EMTP program to calculate the effects of suppression on very fast transient overvoltages in GIS when employing different ZnO Surge Arresters
and gives a simple formula of transient grounding potential rises versus very fast transient overvoltages. A real GIS’s transient grounding potential rise caused by operation of disconnector was measured on site. Following the results
this paper proposes to suppress the GIS’s transient grounding potential rises by using ZnO element.
