Preliminary Study on Spectrometric Method for Measuring Furfural Content in Transformer Oil
Determination of furfural content in transformer oil is an effective method to judge the aging degree of insulated paper in transformer. Currently
the most popular method to measure the content of furfural in transformer oil is HPLC(high performance liquid chromatography). However the measuring process of HPLC is complex and time-consuming. The present paper reports a rapid method for the determination of furfural based on spectroscopy. It is found during the research that when testing the oil sample and oil sample extraction directly by busing spectrograph
the results are affected by BHT(butylated hydroxytoluene) in samples. Nevertheless
the influence resulting from BHT could be eliminated by adding TBA(2-Thiobar
bituric acid) as chromogenic agent. The absorbance of furfural at 390 nm is analyzed. The results show that a favorable linear relationship between the absorbance and the concentration of furfural can be obtained with good reproducibility when the concentration of furfural is within the range of 0.10
