Analysis on Typical Lightning Failure of 500 kV Double-circuit Straight Angle Tower
Calculation and test were conducted to analyze typical lightning failure of 500 kV double-circuit straight angle tower. The structure and insulation parameters of a struck tower were analyzed to derive the relationship of insulator declination angle with lightning protection angle and insulator’s coordinates
and a computational model of shielding failure was built. Calculation with the model proved that the tripping of the tower was due to lightning strike on the middle phase in the inside corner of the tower. Actual lightning ground flash density was considered in the risk assessment of lightning trip. Furthermore
a test platform was built to carry out the test of shielding failure of the double-circuit straight angle tower with a simulation proportion of 1:35 of the actual tower size
and the numbers of shielding failures and discharge paths on different phase conductors were obtained. Hence
the variations of lightning trip rate and risk level with insulator declination angle were summarized. It is suggested that lightning arrester be installed on the middle phase of the inside corner and the insulator declination angle be calibrated.
