±800 kV ultra-high voltage DC（UHVDC） transmission line is an important component of the power grid in China

and its operation state will affect the stability of the power grid directly. UHVDC transmission line features in long transmission distance

complex topography along the line and frequent lightning activity. Lightning flashover has become a key risk point to affect the safe operation of line. At present

±500 kV DC transmission line arrester has realized the development and application

and lightning protection effect is remarkable. But the development and utilization of ±800 kV DC transmission line arrester is still blank. In order to improve the ability of UHVDC transmission line to resist lightning risk

the first domestic ±800 kV DC transmission line arrester was manufactured. The structure of ±800 kV DC transmission line arrester is designed

technical parameters are presented

and the resistor and the production process are selected. The ±800 kV DC transmission line arrester had been developed successfully and verified by the type test

of which the nominal voltage

8/20 ms nominal discharge current 30 k A residual voltage and the positive 50% lighting impulse discharge voltage are 960 kV

1 900 kV and 2 700 kV

respectively. By means of the type test

it is proved that the electrical and mechanical properties of the line surge arrester are reasonable

which assures the line surge arrester could provide satisfactory protection for the insulator string and air clearance. The successful development and ap-plication of the ±800 kV DC transmission line arrester can provide powerful means for lightning protection of UHVDC transmission line.
