Influence of Electrode Erosion on Air Fault Arc in a Closed Container
A two-dimensional model for fault arc in a closed chamber is developed based on magnetic-hydrodynamictheory to investigate the effect of metal vapour eroded from copper electrodes on fault arc. Different energy transfermechanisms including melting
evaporation and chemical reaction due to metal vaporization are taken into account.By solving the conservation equations for mass
momentum
energy
electromagnetic field and mass fraction of cop-per vapour
the coupling effect between the gas hydrodynamic and electromagnetic field is described. The distribu-tions of temperature
pressure and mass fraction of copper vapour are simulated. Comparisons are made between thecalculation results with and without electrode erosion. Results show that the copper vapour eroded from electrodeshas little influence on pressure rise
which mainly attributes to the change of internal energy balance. In addition
the arc voltage is also not sensitive to the presence of copper vapour. The simulated pressure rise
electrode erosionmass and arc voltage agree with the experimental results
which proves that validity of the numerical model.
