Progress of Fiber Optic Sensor in Partial Discharge Detection for Power Cables
Fiber optic sensors recently have attracted increasing research attention for its applications in partial discharge detection. This review paper mainly focuses on the application of fiber optic sensors in partial discharge detec-tion for power cables and its accessories. Single mode Sagnac interferometer has been successfully used in partial dis-charge acoustic detection of silicone rubber under AC/DC voltage
with a minimum detectable apparent charge ap-proaching f C level for anomalous acoustic emissions. Our collaboration with university also proved its applicability inpartial discharge acoustic detection in power cable joint. In comparison
coherent optical time domain reflectometercan achieve distributed sensing with long range
which can effectively detect the acoustic emissions from nC level par-tial discharges in cable joint
and further research on fiber acoustic sensitivity is needed. Moreover
the stress coneused in cable accessories can be made by transparent silicone rubber
so fluorescence fiber can be embedded to de-tect the optical emission from partial discharges. This approach demonstrated excellent sensitivity with similar perfor-mance comparable to conventional electric detection. Finally
fiber optic sensors are believed to be an excellent potential candidate applied in long haul power cable and its joints in the future.
