In order to reduce the high requirement for DC-coil-generated magneto-motive force(MMF)while ensurethe effectiveness of limiting excess current
a new structure of bridge-type hybrid saturated-core fault current limiter(BHFCL)is designed by using both permanent magnets(PMs)and DC current to saturate the ferrite core. The com-pact structure and the shared coil of AC and DC current can reduce the cost and loss. The fault current limiting reac-tance(Lf) in the bridge is used to guarantee the fault clipping ability. The equivalent electromagnetic circuit is estab-lished to explain the principle and study the operating characteristics of the BHFCL. FEA simulation models arebuilt in ANSOFT and a 220 V/10 A laboratory-scale prototype is made and tested to verify the effectiveness of BHF-CL. Experimental and simulation results validate that the BHFCL can reduce considerable energy consumption andhas both low impedance during normal operation and good performance in limiting fault current. And its fault clip-ping performance depends mainly on the value of fault current limiting reactance.
