Investigation of Partial Discharge Characteristics of Typical Defects in XLPE Cable Under AC Voltages
three typical model defects were fabricated by using operated cables.Partial discharge(PD)characteristics of the three typical defects at different applied voltages were studied by a pulse current method.According to phase-resolved PD patterns of the typical defects at different applied voltages
three PD feature quantities were extracted and trend graphs were obtained.Based on the defects fabrication method and test process in this paper
the results showed that the fracture defect had the lowest PD initiation voltage(PDIV)
discharge patterns were obviously asymmetrical. The PDIV of the void defect was the highest
the discharge gradually shifted to the first and third quadrants with an increase of the applied voltage. The negative half-cycle discharge of the needle defect was "Γ" type. The characteristic quantities of the three typical defects presented different trends with the increase of the applied voltage. The PD width of the needle defect was the largest
whereas average discharges of the three typical defects increased with the increase of the applied voltage. The discharge repetition rate of the fracture defects and void defects increased with the increase of the applied voltage
but the discharge repetition rate of the needle defect decreased with the increase of the applied voltage. This indicated that the extracted feature quantities could be used as the characteristic reference quantities for the pattern recognition of the cable typical defects.
