Exploration on the Process of Preparing SiC Based on Self-propagation Reaction with Sucrose as Carbon Source
The scope of application of SiC is continuously expanded due to its unique physical and chemical properties. However
in view of such shortcomings as high energy consumption
serious pollution and low efficiency in the current SiC preparation process
in this paper a process to prepare SiC using sucrose as a carbon source is proposed. The magnesium powder
SiO
2
and sucrose are used as the raw materials
a self-propagating reaction is adopted to prepare SiC under the protection of an argon atmosphere. The experimental results show that the excess coefficient of magnesium powder is less than 60%
indicating the presence of unreacted SiO
2
in the product. Additionally
the reaction exhibits incomplete characteristics. With the increase of the magnesium powder content
the unreacted SiO
2
content in the product is gradually decreased until it disappears
while the Mg
2
Si content in the product is gradually increased. With the improvement of sucrose content in the raw material
the crystallinity of
3C-SiC in the product shows firstly increase and then decrease. In case of 80% excess of magnesium powder and a 40% excess of sucrose
the crystallinity of the product is up to 45.58%
and the microscopic morphology exhibits characteristics of an amorphous lump. The DSC curves of the C
12
H
22
O
11
-SiO
2
-Mg system shows that SiC is generated in two stages. Initially
sucrose is decomposed into C and H
2
O
and subsequently
the generated C participates in the reaction between SiO
2
and Mg
finally resulting in the formation of SiC. The exothermic peaks observed in the measured DSC curves are calculated in accordance with the Freeman-Carroll method
and the results show that the activation energy of E of the synthesis reaction of SiC=16.516 kJ mol
